Smoke Control Area updates and PM2.5 monitoring using Defra New Burdens Funding

The Government provides New Burdens payments to local authorities so they can deliver updates to Smoke Control Areas. We are working with authorities to review current and new SCAs, assess whether they meet current legislative and practical needs, and reshape them where required. This can include public consultation, health and economic assessments and reporting. Alongside this work, many authorities also undertake lower cost PM2.5 monitoring, with rigorous and proven QA/QC; to ensure the results reliably steer and inform policy decision making.
